Painless cosmetic viable with Serdev Technique
Thursday, Mar 26, 2009
COOKEVILLE -- Advances in cosmetic surgery techniques are giving patients more options as they fight against gravity.
Dr. Laura Connelly is now offering suture suspension surgery, featuring the Serdev Technique.
"There is no scar," Connelly said. "And it does last."
The suture suspension procedure lifts loose skin or soft tissue using sutures that attach to the fibrous covering of the bone or fixed ligaments.
"It uses a semi-elastic suture, so it has a little bit of give," Connelly said.
"While the suture may stretch a little, it is fixed, so it is much more permanent than other procedures."
Connelly is so certain the procedure will provide lasting results, she offers a three-year guarantee on any of the suture suspension procedures.
It was developed by Dr. Nikolay Serdev of Bulgaria, who has trained about 50 U.S. physicians to perform his procedure in the past year. Connelly said she was the only practitioner offering the procedure in Tennessee.
The procedure can be used on the lower face, the neck, the eyebrows. Inner thigh, buttock and breast lifts are also possible. It can also be used for nose tip or angle refinement, ear refinements and chin lifts.
"It works best if you have loose skin," Connelly said.
The procedure is done at the office as an outpatient procedure. It can take a few hours depending, and the patient is awake and under local anesthetic. Patients are given medication to relax them during the procedure.
"It's done right here in the office, and they are awake through the whole procedure," she said.
Recovery time is minimal, as well, and results can be seen almost immediately.
Traditional lifts required a surgeon to make large incisions and required general anesthesia.
Cris West, who had a lower and mid-face lift and eyebrow lift, said she was back at work the next day.
"It was painless," she said. "I was awake through the whole procedure and was back at work the next day with no pain."
West said she had no scarring from the surgery and immediately saw results.
"It's the best thing ever," she said. "Dr. Connelly just has so much confidence and makes you feel relaxed through the whole procedure."
Connelly, who is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, first became involved with cosmetic services about 10 years ago when she began offering laser hair removal through her Cookeville practice, The Women's Place.
“I saw a lot of women with hormonal problems with excessive facial and body hair,” she said. From that, she found there was interest in skin care treatments, such as laser vein therapy for varicose veins and microdermabrasion, along with collagen and Botox treatments.
About 18 months ago, she began offering LipoSelection and SmartLipo, which is less invasive then traditional liposuction surgery
Then I heard about Dr. Serdev,” she said. She attended training where she learned directly from him.
Connelly is offering a face lift for a benefit auction at the Pink Ribbon of Hope Gala, with a retail value of $7,500. She said if the winning bidder was not in need of a face lift, she would instead perform a buttock and breast lift.
In addition to being a board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist and member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, Connelly is a member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and a fellow with the Royal College of Surgeons in Canada and an attorney. She has practiced in Cookeville for 11 years with her husband, Dr. Joe Tokrauk, an endocrinologist.
